Do international pupils have to speak English at all times?

We ask pupils to use English as much as possible, especially in lessons, activities, and around school.

Using English helps pupils learn the language and feel part of school life. In the boarding houses and during school activities, pupils are expected to speak English. Most international pupils find they are speaking English almost all the time after a short while.

However, we understand there are moments when pupils feel safer or more comfortable using their first language, for example when they are tired or upset. In these situations, we allow pupils to use their mother tongue. Many staff members speak other languages and can support pupils in their native language when needed.
