How do you support new pupils in the Prep?

New pupils in Prep are given clear, friendly support so they can settle quickly and feel part of the school community.

Every new pupil is assigned a “guardian angel” for their first few days or weeks. Their guardian:

  • Guides them around the school
  • Accompanies them at break times
  • Helps them learn daily routines and expectations

This support is especially important in the first few weeks. Most children adapt very quickly and, once they feel confident, the new pupil becomes more independent and the guardian role naturally becomes less visible.

In Prep 6, pupils take on prefect roles and responsibilities. This includes caring for new arrivals and doing their best to make sure younger pupils are looked after at playtimes and during other social interactions. All of Prep 6 act as buddies to our new Reception starters, and they listen to them read weekly, helping to build confidence and strong cross‑age friendships.

We also have a Buddy Bench, used to great effect at playtimes. If a child would like someone to play with or simply talk to, they can sit on the Buddy Bench, and another pupil will come over to invite them to join in a game or conversation.
